Lesson 1: Building and Extending a Declarative Agent

In the following exercises, you'll build and extend a fully functional Microsoft 365 Copilot agent using Copilot Studio. You'll start by creating a declarative agent with custom instructions, then enhance it with SharePoint-based knowledge for grounded, citation-backed answers. You'll guide user interactions with carefully crafted starter prompts and build prompt actions to generate structured responses from user input. Finally, you'll integrate a live SharePoint connector to allow your agent to retrieve real-time data from a document library. By the end of the course, you’ll have a published agent ready for use across Microsoft 365 apps like Teams, Word, and Excel.

Exercises
Exercise 1: Create a declarative agent In this exercise you will create a declarative agent using generative AI, refine the instructions, publish the agent to Microsoft 365, and test the agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot. Estimated Time: 20 minutes
Exercise 2: Add custom knowledge In this exercise you will update the declarative agent you created in the previous exercise with custom instructions and grounding data. This exercise assumes you have a SharePoint site with a document library named "Products" that contains sample product files. Estimated Time: 20 minutes
Exercise 3: Add starter prompts In this exercise you will update the declarative agent you created in the previous exercise with six starter prompts. Estimated Time: 10 minutes
Exercise 4: Create a prompt action In this exercise you will create a prompt action, test the prompt in Copilot Studio, and test the prompt within a Copilot agent. You'll create a prompt action that helps users turn their raw ideas into organized marketing pitches that follow a specific format and guidelines. Estimated Time: 15 minutes
Exercise 5: Create a connector action In this exercise you will configure a connector action for a declarative agent in Copilot Studio. You'll use the "SharePoint - List folder" connector to retrieve a list of files from a Products folder that contains product support files. Estimated Time: 15 minutes
