Offensive Security Fundamentals
Learn the offensive security mindset - how attackers think, recon, exploit, and move laterally - through the full pentest lifecycle. Hands-on CTF challenges against intentionally-vulnerable systems let you run a basic pentest, communicate findings to defenders, and understand why offensive knowledge makes better defenders.

About This Course
Learn the offensive security mindset how attackers think, recon targets, exploit vulnerabilities, and move laterally. Course covers the full pentest lifecycle (Rules of Engagement recon exploitation post-exploitation reporting) with hands-on CTF challenges against intentionally-vulnerable systems. By the end you can run a basic pentest, communicate findings to defenders, and understand why offensive knowledge makes you a better defender.
Course Curriculum
9 Lessons
Rules of Engagement and offensive security ethics
Learn the Rules of Engagement (RoE) framework that distinguishes authorized pentesting from criminal hacking, understand the ethical responsibilities of offensive security practitioners, and know the specific documentation (scope, timing, data handling, notification) that protects you + the client. By the end you can draft a RoE document and know when to STOP a test.
Recon methodology — passive and active
Learn pentester recon: passive techniques (OSINT, DNS, certificate transparency) that leave no trace on the target, and active techniques (port scanning, banner grabbing, vuln scanning) that are detectable. By the end you can perform recon against a scope + build the attack-surface map.
Recon practice against scanme.nmap.org - Lab Exercises
Note: This lab pre-provisions an Azure Linux VM at start — allow up to 10 minutes.
Practice recon against scanme.nmap.org (the Nmap Project's explicitly-authorized test target) + passive OSINT techniques. By the end you will have a reconnaissance report demonstrating passive + active recon discipline.
Exploitation fundamentals and Metasploit
Learn the exploitation phase of a pentest: how to turn a known vulnerability into a working proof-of-concept, use Metasploit for commodity exploits, and understand the OWASP Top 10 web application vulnerabilities. By the end you can select an appropriate exploit for a vulnerability, demonstrate it safely, and know when custom exploitation is required vs when Metasploit modules suffice.
OWASP Top 10 CTF challenges - Lab Exercises
Note: This lab pre-provisions an Azure Linux VM at start — allow up to 10 minutes.
Practice OWASP Top 10 exploitation against a locally-staged vulnerable application. Each successful exploitation yields a flag you submit to earn credit. By the end you will have demonstrated SQL injection (A03), broken access control (A01), security misconfiguration (A05), and server-side request forgery (A10).
Post-exploitation and lateral movement
Learn what happens AFTER initial access — enumeration, credential harvesting (Mimikatz patterns), privilege escalation, lateral movement to other systems. Understand the attacker mindset so you can defend against it. By the end you know the top 10 post-exploitation techniques + what their forensic signatures look like.
CTF practice - privilege escalation + lateral - Lab Exercises
Note: This lab pre-provisions an Azure Linux VM at start — allow up to 10 minutes.
Practice privilege escalation + credential dumping + lateral movement patterns through a scripted CTF-style challenge chain on a Linux VM. Each successful step yields a flag.
Pentest reporting and remediation guidance
Learn to write a pentest report that actually drives remediation: structure (executive summary + technical findings + remediation), writing findings with reproducible evidence, prioritizing by business impact, and the specific remediation guidance that developers can act on. By the end you can convert raw pentest findings into a report Camila presents to the Board.
Pentest capstone - produce the final report - Lab Exercises
Course 6 capstone: consolidate the lab findings from Labs 1-3 into the Beacon Harbor Q4 pentest report. Produce executive summary, technical findings with reproduction + evidence + remediation, and remediation tracking matrix. Deliverable: a report Camila could present to the Beacon Harbor Board.
